Anyone going to the LaSalle County courthouses must put on a mask or stay outside. That’s in the ordinance the County Board approved Monday afternoon. Attorney Julie Ajster thinks the emergency meeting was called in reaction to questions she raised last week. She claims the mask rule was being enforced inconsistently.

County Board Attorney George Mueller says as an ordinance, and not just a policy out of the Restore Illinois plan, even judges can’t vary the rule now. Sheriff Tom Templeton says if someone claims an inability to wear a mask, accommodations will be made with the goal of protecting everyone from COVID-19.

It will be up to the sheriff’s department and courthouse security to determine if a face covering is adequate. Bandanas and other coverings that easily slip off haven’t been allowed.
