Sen. Dick Durbin says Cong. John Lewis was a good friend and he’ll miss him. Lewis was beaten and arrested during a civil rights march across the Edmund Pettus bridge in Selma, Alabama in the 1960s. Durbin took a trip there with Lewis many years later.
Lewis’ body was taken across the bridge this week on the way to the U.S. Capitol. There are people calling to rename the bridge after Lewis. Pettus was a high ranking Confederate officer who became a U.S. Senator.
