Ambulance calls were down in Ottawa for a while over the last few months. Fire Department Chief Andy Borkowski says the coronavirus is why. He was on WCMY’s Morning Mix show with Maggie Frost and explained that people were afraid to go to the hospital.

Borkowski says the virus also changed the common calls for help getting up. He says with people isolating themselves and not checking on each other so much, there were a lot of people who’d fallen and remained on the floor for several hours before anyone else knew. That can be very bad for an elderly person.

Ambulances are being thoroughly cleaned to minimize the chance of the personnel and patients transmitting coronavirus in them. Borkowski says the personnel are using modified equipment to spray sanitizer on everything.
