You now have a chance to be in attendance for The White Sox opening three-game series against Minnesota in a unique way. The Sox announced their new initiative, called FANtastic Faces, which gives fans the opportunity to purchase a cardboard cutout of their likeness and have it displayed at Guaranteed Rate Field during the team’s first homestand against the Twins. The team will be producing just 15 hundred of these FANtastic Faces cardboard cutouts for $49 apiece. Once the opening three-game series against Minnesota concludes, the cutouts will then be authenticated by the team and available for pick-up. All proceeds from these sales will benefit Chicago White Sox Charities, which works to support hundreds of Chicago-based organizations.
Kyle Schwarber is prepared to be the Cubs designated-hitter. The DH is being instituted in the National League for the shortened 60-game season, which begins later this month. Schwarber said he will gladly accept any role new manager David Ross presents him, but he will be ready to play the field. The lefty slugger is a lifetime .299 hitter with nine home runs, and 20 RBIs in 22 games as a DH. The designated-hitter could be implemented into the NL on a full-time basis as part of the next collective bargaining agreement after the 2021 season.
Brandon Morrow’s time with the Cubs is over following an injury plagued stint on the North Side. The club released the right-hand reliever yesterday. The 35-year-old hasn’t pitched in a game since the first half of 2018, during which he posted a 1.47 ERA with 22 saves in 35 appearances. The Cubs, who declined his 2020 option but signed him to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Wisconsin and Northwestern will not meet on the gridiron this season at Wrigley Field. The contest is being moved from the home of Chicago Cubs to Ryan Field on the Northwestern campus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The game is still scheduled to be played November 7th.
There will be no Ivy League sports this fall. The conference is the first in Division One to rule out sports in the fall semester due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Ivy League has not yet decided on winter or spring sports, or the possibility that this fall’s sports could be moved to the spring of 2021.
With training camp less than three weeks away, the NFL and union are discussing player opt-outs. The NFL reports the two sides are on the same page, but need to establish a specific date in which a player can declare he is opting out. Also unsettled is how opt-outs will affect player contracts.
U.S. Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings, is being ranked the best among its peers in the NFL. The Athletic’s ranking of NFL Stadiums listed the Vikings’ home as tops. The stadium opened in 2016.
The NHL is hoping to start its 2020-2021 season by December 1st. The league’s governors and the players must vote on the deal. The current season is expected to end no later than October 6th.
NASCAR has revealed its latest stretch of the upcoming schedule for the Cup Series. The final race of the season will be in Phoenix on November 8th. Other highlights include a doubleheader in Michigan, a road course at Daytona, a doubleheader in Dover and a return trip to Daytona at the end of August.
Kyle Busch is the pole sitter for Sunday’s Cup Series race at Kentucky Speedway. Joey Logano will join him in the front row. Busch is a two-time winner at Kentucky.
