U.S. Senate Democrats plan to block a Republican police reform bill today in a procedural move to force a debate on it. Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois says the Republicans’ Justice Act doesn’t go far enough. He says the other side, currently controlling the Senate, should consider the Democrats’ Justice in Policing Act.
Durbin says the Republican bill doesn’t reform qualified immunity which shields police officers from lawsuits. He says it doesn’t add to the Justice Department’s ability to investigate misconduct and won’t limit the transfer of used military equipment to local police departments.
