Retired Ottawa High School athletic trainer Joe Haywood says former athletic director Tim Jobst didn’t yell a lot. He had a calm, rational approach as the head football coach.
Even in the playoffs, Jobst didn’t get rattled. He switched to “plan B” if “plan A” didn’t work, such as when a player got hurt. Jobst would bring in another player to fill the spot and then talk with the hurt player.
Jobst took seven teams to the playoffs and three of them won championships. Haywood says Jobst’s weightlifting program helped him get to know the athletes. Different groups would train on different days.
Jobst was 69 when he died Saturday. He’d been battling esophageal cancer. Haywood says he’s glad his friend isn’t suffering any longer.
Jobst was inducted into the OHS Hall of Fame last year.
