LaSalle City Council ends truck route for Carus Chemical on Porter Ave.

No semi-trucks will be allowed on Porter Ave. in LaSalle. The city council approved discontinuing the truck route at last night’s meeting. This comes after Carus Chemical says they will no longer use the Apollo Warehouse, which is off Porter Avenue, to store materials. City Attorney Jim McPhedran says the truck route designation ends on July 8th.

Alderman Bob Thompson says he and resident Jamie Hicks are going to look at the Apollo Warehouse to make sure it’s empty after Carus said it was.

The warehouse is a concern for residents because of the condition it was in when materials were stored there and why materials were allowed to be stored at the warehouse in the first place. Some concerned was expressed by some residents before the fire as well. The ordinance was first approved at LaSalle’s Streets, Alleys, and Traffic Committee before being approved by the full council. Residents who atteneded and were in favor of the change gave a round of applaused after the committee meeting. One of the next steps the council wants to take it getting air quality monitors around the chemical company. Thompson also says he got an update.

He’s talking about Alderman Joe Jeppson, who will oversee the installation of an air quality device.
