Peru votes to allow Airbnb’s

The city of Peru will allow Airbnb’s. However, you must apply for a special use permit and go through the city’s planning and zoning commission first. One resident, who did not want to be named, told the city council he had a bad experience with an Airbnb before in his neighborhood. He wants to make sure there are regulations in place. He says they don’t belong in residential neighborhoods.

Police eventually took care of the problem and shut it down. City Attorney Scott Schweickert says before anyone can start an Airbnb, they must apply for a special use permit and go through the city’s Planning and zoning commission. Residents within 200 feet will get a notice from the city about an it and can come to support it or be against it before the Planning and zoning commission approves it.

Schweickert also says that there are some parts of the city where an Airbnb will not be allowed, so you have to make sure you live in a zoning area that allows it.  The city council approved two other ordinances. One changes the language in the city’s bed and breakfast laws because there is a difference between a B&B and an Airbnb. A regular bed and breakfast has it’s own rules under Illinois State law. The Airbnb is regulated by the city. The other ordinance allowed a person on 4th St. to be able to create an Airbnb. The person has been waiting about six months after properly applying.
