Fire departments have taught fire safety to children for decades; now Nicor Gas is teaching gas safety to children. The company has an online digital arcade with games to teach about calling 811 to find out where the underground utilities are. Spokeswoman Jennifer Golz says this month is National Safe Digging Month.
Golz says before doing any digging in your yard, you should call 811 to have the lines marked. Accidentally cutting the internet line or breaking a water line could be inconvenient. Accidentally cutting a gas or electric line could be fatal.
