Ottawa considers budget with possibility of tax revenue cuts due to shutdowns

Ottawa’s city council could adopt a $47 million budget next week for the new fiscal year that starts May 1. The $47 million in spending is matched with a little over $43 million in revenue. The $3.8 million deficit will be covered with money on hand.

Those numbers are for if the predictions come true. If businesses stay shut down and a lot of people stay out of work for a long time, the city won’t get the $6 million in sales tax revenue, $423,000 in video gambling tax money, and $28,000 in parking fines.

To cut expenses, City Hall is already putting off pool repairs and keeping the pool closed this year. The City Council could vote on the budget next week.
