A teen was helped out of the Vermillion River in Streator yesterday evening. The Streator Fire Department says they were called to the Canoe Launch Area off of W. Main St. for a possible river rescue because a 13-year old girl couldn’t move in the flowing river. When they got there they found the teen about 25 feet into the river with a man helping her stand in about two feet of water. Firefighters put on lifejackets and went into the river the get the girl. The teen was eventually walked out of the river, was treated, and released. The department was at the canoe launch for less than half an hour. The fire department says it’s important to remember that even in shallow water flowing swiftly can be more dangerous than it appears.
