The city of Peru is one step closer to getting a pedestrian bridge over IL 251. City Engineer Eric Carls says the city got an Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program Grant worth $3 million. They applied for it in September last year. The bridge would be north of the Hy-Vee Grocery Store and Liberty Village of Peru. Chamlin and Associates Director of Engineering Jim Clinard also told the city council in September the path is needed because the closest bridge to cross the other side of 251 is almost a mile away. It could be similar to the one built in Ottawa over Interstate 80. Carls says It would provide better access for people to walk and bike to different parts of the city like Veteran’s Park, Baker Lake, and other residential neighborhoods. His office is very excited about the project. They will start planning the project right away. The entire project could cost around $3.7 million.
