Desk duty for police officer after gun scare at St. Bede

If the man who got police attention at Tuesday’s St. Bede Academy baseball game returns for another game in the near future, it’ll be without the gun he had. He’s a Secretary of State police officer and was allowed to have the gun with him in public while off-duty. That has since changed, at least temporarily.

Spring Valley Police Chief Adam Curran says the man wasn’t cooperative with uniformed officers. Secretary of State spokesman Henry Haupt says supervisors have since taken the officer’s gun and badge. He’s on desk duty while supervisors investigate.

Haupt says the agency takes the situation very seriously, especially because it involved a law enforcement officer. Secretary of State Police enforce laws concerning stolen vehicles, vehicle titles, and auto parts illegally taken and sold to salvage yards. They also provide security at the state capitol.
