The Knuessl Building on W. Main St. in downtown Ottawa

Local landmark status considered for downtown Ottawa building

If one building in downtown Ottawa gets recognition for being historic, should others? Ottawa Community Development Specialist Tami Koppen asked that question at a Historic Preservation Commission meeting last week. Member Chuck Stanley proposed getting a plaque for the Knuessl Building in the 200 block of W. Main.

The Knuessel Building went up in the 1860’s. The Historic Preservation Commission talked last week about honoring it with local landmark status.

From a related discussion, Reddick Mansion is included in the National Register of Historic Places. It’s part of the Washington Square Historic District. Reddick Mansion Association President Lorraine McCallister thinks it would be better for the mansion to be listed separately. She says it’s hard to find the mansion on the National Register.

She talked about that last week at the Ottawa Historic Preservation Commission meeting.
