The Sierra Club Illinois chapter wants more testing and transparency for LaSalle residents affected by the Carus Chemical Fire. The environmental organization discussed how tests done by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and Brownfield group during and after the fire didn’t show a lot of information about the smoke and ash that went in the air. Toxic and Remediation Specialist Denise Trabbic-Pointer says the organization tested air filters for metals like barium, copper, lead, and manganese.
She also says it’s tough to determine if it’s okay for pets and young children to be outside in places affected by the fire.
Clean Water Advocate Mila Mitchell also discussed with residents how they can come together to get some accountability from Carus.
Some residents claimed that some recent stories from the media are making Carus look like a group that cares about the community while they don’t feel that way.
