One year of court supervision for wrongful home move-in

A Streator woman is starting one year on court supervision and must pay nearly $700 in fines and court costs for moving into a house without permission. Donna Casey-Schultz is also required to avoid contact with the home’s owner and stay off the property.

Police arrested her for trespassing and property damage in August. Police say she cut off a lock, changed door knobs, and started putting up a welcome sign at a home someone else was remodeling.

Casey-Schultz told Judge H. Chris Ryan today, she had a lease for the place in 2016 and didn’t know she wasn’t allowed to be there. Someone else bought it in 2018. Her lawyer argued that the lease should have transferred to the new owner; Ryan ruled that it didn’t.

Court supervision means if she stays out of trouble, the case won’t stay on her criminal record.
