After a year and six months Carmen Bolden-Day, the mother of Jelani Day, says she still wants answers after her son’s body was pulled from the Illinois River near Peru in September 2021. She spoke to the Peru City Council last night, but specifically addressed Mayor Ken Kolowski and Peru Police Chief Sarah Raymond. She says she has lost complete faith in them and claims that they are not taking her son’s death seriously because she believes that her son was murdered. She says it’s more than about justice for Jelani, it’s about accountability.

She also says Raymond hasn’t been doing a good job updating her.

The coroner’s report said that Jelani drowned, and the medical examiners’ office’s report ruled out any injury, attack, or disease. Although the examiners office also said Day’s body wasn’t in the best condition for an autopsy. Bolden-Day said she wants the FBI to fully take over the investigation and wants more accountability for the lack of answers in the case. In a press release, Raymond says the departments involved have worked tirelessly in the investigation into Jelani’s death. She also says the department is committed to continue to provide Jelani’s family with all information that they can disclose.
