St. Rep. Yednock says instant emergency status won’t happen to keep Peru hospital open

St. Rep. Lance Yednock believes SMP Health had a failed strategy. He said during an interview on WCMY Radio this morning, he thinks the hospital system didn’t follow the law about hospital closures. He thinks the plan was to demonstrate an emergency to get rural emergency hospital status approved faster, but bureaucracy doesn’t work that way.

Yednock says the challenges that led to the one-week notice that St. Margaret’s Health Peru would close didn’t just suddenly happen. And he’s bothered that he could have tried to find help in the legislature had he known about the troubles.

Yednock, like Sen. Sue Rezin a few days ago, said legislation was passed to help SMP Health keep the hospital open, so there are big questions now about why it didn’t.
