Carus Chemical Spokesman Allen Gibbs says the company is working with local first responders, officials, and regulatory groups to clean up the potassium permanganate after the fire that broke out Wednesday. He also reminded residents affected by the fire to call the Carus Hotline at 815-224-6662 and to use water to remove any of the compound at a second press conference at the Grove Center Thursday. LaSalle Deputy City Clerk Brent Bader also explained why it took so long to lift the shelter in place.

Gibbs also says that residents should use water to clean off the potassium permanganate and then use the peroxide and vinegar solution if the compound leaves a stain. He explained the problems the company was having while creating the hotline saying there were mistakes.

Other officials with local, state, and national offices also answered questions at the press conference. LaSalle Fire Chief Jerry Janick says the cause of the fire is undetermined but there is no sign suspicious activity. He also says the fire department is no longer involved with the investigation. US Environmental Protection Agency Spokesman Robert Kondreck says the air quality testing the agency did didn’t show any issues. Tony Falconio with Illinois EPA says anyone with pets should keep them away from the potassium and use water to clean it off if it gets on them. LaSalle County Health Department Director Chris Pozzi also said that if anyone is concerned about their health can contact their doctor. No residents affected by the fire spoke at this press conference.

The LaSalle County Health Department is also posting the EPA Air Quality Report on their website as well.
