The Streator Fire Department says a smoke detector saved the life of a resident in the 400 block of Oakley Ave. Firefighters say they were called after the resident reported smoke coming from the home after they got outside. It took firefighters thirty minutes to put the fire out because it took several attempts to get inside the house because of the intense heat and smoke. The resident was treated by paramedics and released. No other injuries were reported. Because of heavy fire damage the home is considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is still not known but firefighters say it’s not suspicious. Firefighters also said it’s a reminder that smoke detectors save lives. The smoke detector in the home was installed through the Streator Fire Safety Initiative.
