Top stories of 2022: Ottawa YMCA groundbreaking

By WCMY News Dec 21, 2022 | 11:18 AM

The city of Ottawa is getting a new building for the YMCA. The groundbreaking ceremony is one of our top stories of 2022. For at least the last ten years, getting a new building has been talked about. The first idea was to build a new rec center instead of another Y. But it turned out that a new YMCA would be best. During the groundbreaking ceremony in October, Ottawa Y Executive Director Joe Capece thanked many sponsors for their donations to the new building.

Although the YMCA’s board got the funding to build the $26 million facility, Executive Director Joe Capece said in September that not everything will be built as originally planned. Specifically, the outdoor park and a south side parking lot will not be built right away.

At the groundbreaking ceremony Board Pres. Konni Rodeghier also says this year was also dedicated to securing contracts to build the new Y and making sure enough was raised. The new Y is expected to be completed by 2024.

Ottawa YMCA board members , local, and state officials break ground on the long awaited project.
