LaSalle City Council approves creating ordinance requiring working lights on motorized bikes

A new ordinance in LaSalle will require electric and gas-powered bikes to have a working headlight and tail light. The city council unanimously approved allowing City Attorney Jim McPhedran to create the ordinance that could be passed at another city council meeting next month. Alderman Bob Thompson wanted the ordinance created in the first place. He says some residents told him that they’ve almost people on the bikes because it’s hard to see them.

He says according to state law, a bicycle only needs reflectors even if they are electric or gas powered. In the future, the city could be looking at creating an age limit to ride the bikes or banning them all together. But that’s not part of the new ordinance the city wants to create now.
