October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. And the Zonta Clubs of Ottawa, Streator, and LaSalle-Peru are once again having their annual domestic violence luminary walk. This year it will be in Ottawa. Safe Journey’s Executive Director Susan Burstzynsky says it will start at 6:30pm at Washington Square Park Thursday. It will focus on themes from a book called “Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay. and a Mother’s Will to Survive.” The book talks about how poverty can be a cause of domestic violence.
Burstzynsky says there is one question people ask if someone is a victim of domestic violence, why didn’t that person leave?
The walk will end at First United Methodist Church. There will also be three people speaking during the event: Ottawa Zonta Club Pres. Becky Keene, Resource Librarian at Illinois Valley Community College Grace Morris, and Heather Steel the community educator with Safe Journeys.
