State struggling to find enough snow plow drivers

The Illinois Department of Transportation is having trouble filling all its seasonal job openings. There are about 300 openings for drivers who clear the highways when it snows. District 3 Operations Engineer Junior Senat says a second round of job opening announcements went out last week.

Fewer people have been applying for the jobs every year for a few years now. Low pay, more retirements, and tougher CDL requirements have been offered as reasons. Senate says the pay is up to $5,000 per month for six-month temporary workers who perform other duties when it’s not snowing. So he thinks the pay is good.

Hourly workers get called in as needed. If enough workers aren’t hired, the state will still plow highways. It’ll take longer. Some highways will get priority and so may be cleared sooner than others.
