THURSDAY LOCAL SPORTS UPDATE

Last night in the MLB playoffs, The San Diego Padres defeated the Phillies 8-5 in Game Two to even the series at one.  The Padres exploded for five runs in the fifth inning after trailing by four early in the game. Elsewhere, the Astros took a 1-0 lead in the ALCS with a 4-2 win over the Yankees in Houston. New York will look to respond in Game Two tonight.

 

The Chicago Bulls led by as many as 15 points during a 116-108 season-opening victory over the Heat in Miami. DeMar DeRozan poured in 37 points in the victory, while Nikola Vucevic had 15 points and 17 rebounds. The Bulls open the season with a 1-0 record, and will visit the Wizards tomorrow night.

The Associated Press published the IHSA Football week 9 top ten poll:

In Class 1A: Marquette moved up from 9th to the 8th spot

In Class 3A: Seneca stayed 8th, Princeton remained 3rd

In Class 5A: Morris jumped from 6th to 4th, Sycamore stayed 2nd ranked

 

The LP / Ottawa Swim team competed at the Pontiac Quadrangular Meet. Winners for LPO were Clara Guglielmetti in the 100 and 200 Freestyle, Lilly Mustered in the 200 Medley and Guglielmetti, Kailey Goetsch, Evvie Jeppson and Mikenna DeSpain in the 200 freestyle relay.

 

Serena lost 9-2 to Quincy Notre Dame at the Soccer Class 1A Mendota Sectional semifinal. The Huskers goalkeeper Carson Baker finished with 20 saves in the loss.

 

Woodland won at DePue in Volleyball. For the Lady Warriors, Shae Simons had 13 assists, two aces, Emma Highland and Chloe Johnston each had four kills.

 

Shepherd competed with Pontiac in girls basketball. The 7th Grade team lost 19-16. Kennedy Kane had 6 points. The 8th Graders won 33-7. Ashlynn Ganiere had 20 points,7 steals and Reese Purcell finished with 6 points, 7 rebounds for the Lady Rams.

 

Also in girls basketball, Marquette Academy won on the road at Lasalle Lincoln 49-3. For the 8th grade Lady Knights, Anna Hjerpe led the way with 17 points and Hunter Hopkins added 14 points in the victory.
