Couple results in local sports during the Holiday yesterday.

Marquette defeated Dwight in the Tri-County Conference volleyball tournament. Top performers for the Lady Crusaders were Lindsey Kaufmann, Kaylee Killelea, Eva McCallum, Lilly Craig, Makayla Backos, Maisie Lyons and Jaida Pitts.

At the Amboy Columbus Day Cross-Country Invitational held at the Shady Oaks Country. Regional competitor for the boys was Seneca’s Austin Aldridge who placed 12th.  

In the girls event, Seneca’s Evelyn O’Connor was 5th and Gracie Steffes finished 32nd also for the Lady Irish. Marquette was led by Maggie Jewett.

 

On Monday night Football, The Chiefs held on for a 30-29 come-from-behind victory over the Raiders in an exciting matchup in Kansas City.  Las Vegas got out to a 17-point lead midway through the second quarter before the Chiefs began their comeback.  Patrick Mahomes threw for 292 yards and connected on four touchdown passes to Tight End Travis Kelce. The Raiders are now 1-and-4, while the Chiefs improved to 4-and-1.

The Chicago Bears activated wide receiver N’Keal Harry from injured reserve yesterday.  Harry has been out since training camp with a high-ankle sprain.  The Bears traded for the 2019 first-round pick in July.  The Bears host Washington on Thursday night.

 

The Carolina Panthers are parting ways with Head Coach Matt Rhule.  Rhule was in his third season with the Panthers and leaves with a record of 11-27.  Secondary coach Steve Wilks will take over as interim head coach.  Wilks served as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals for one season.  

 

The Bulls wrap-up preseason with a game against the Milwaukee Bucks at United Center tonight.  The Bulls beat the Raptors 115-98 on Sunday to improve to 2-and-1 in exhibition play.  The Bulls will prepare for their season opener against the Miami Heat on October 19th.

 

The MLB playoffs resume today with all four division series’ getting underway.  The action gets started in Atlanta when the Braves face the Phillies. The Mariners and Astros will square off in Houston, followed by the Guardians versus Yankees in New York.  The Padres will meet the Dodgers in the final game of the night.

The White Sox have begun their managerial search. Former Giants manager Bruce Bochy, former Rangers manager Ron Washington, and former Cardinals manager Mike Shildt are the leading candidates for the job.  Tony La Russa resigned as the team’s manager last week after missing the last month of the season due to health issues. 

 

The Cubs are hoping to keep their All-Star catcher around.  President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer told reporters yesterday that the team will be making a qualifying offer to Willson Contreras.  The qualifying offer is a one-year deal at a price set by MLB. Contreras had 22 home runs this season.
