Fall Colors Weekend is this weekend at Starved Rock State Park. IDNR Natural Resources Coordinator Lisa Sons says she and several other volunteers will lead guided hikes at 10am and 1pm on both days. Sons says the tour will lead visitors to see places like Starved Rock, Eagle Cliff, the Lovers Leap Overlook, and some of the canyons. She says during the hike people will be learning about trees and why they only change colors in the fall.
She says each volunteer will take a group of forty people at a time because the lessons on the hike can be lost when there are more than forty people. And they need to come prepared. Sons recommends having a bottle of water at all times because there are no water fill-up stations on the trail. She also says dress in layers.
Anyone who wants to register for the event can click here to register for a spot on the guided tour. The hikes will be about one to two miles long and will last about an hour and a half to two hours.
Son also says she hopes to see more people this year. In previous years she says she lead groups of sixty to eighty at a time. Last year there were only about twenty people on the tours.
