Yan Gomes hit a go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning as the Cubs edged the Nationals 3-2 at Nationals Park. Gomes broke a 2-2 tie with his lone hit of the game, and P.J. Higgins launched a two-run blast in the victory. Erich Uelmen got the win in relief, while Rowan Wick notched his eighth save of the year. The North-Siders have won two straight to improve to 49-and-67 and will send Adrian Sampson to the hill when they head to Baltimore to take on the Orioles today.
The St. Louis Cardinals kept the Rockies hitters in check during a 5-1 win at Busch Stadium. Jordan Montgomery earned his sixth win of the season while holding the Rockies to just one run and six hits over five-and-two-thirds innings. The Cards increased their NL Central lead to three games with a 65-and-51 record. Adam Wainwright starts for the Red Birds against the Rockies this afternoon.
The Chicago Sky lost to the seven-seeded New York Liberty 98-91 in game one of the first round in the WNBA Playoffs at Wintrust Arena. The Sky trail New York 1-0 in the best-of-three series. They’ll need to win game two on Saturday night to keep their season alive.
The Bears play their second NFL preseason game against the Seahawks in Seattle tonight. The Bears earned a win over the Kansas City Chiefs in their first exhibition contest last Saturday.
The PGA’s FedEx Cup Playoffs continue today with the BMW Championship in Wilmington Delaware. Patrick Cantlay will be looking to defend his crown after winning last year’s tournament.
The NBA released its complete league schedule yesterday. The Bulls will open the regular season on the road against the Miami Heat on October 19th and will have their home opener on October 22nd against the Cavaliers.

Marquette defeated Woodland and their host Putnam County in a triangular matchup at Edgewood Golf Course. Daniel Hoffman, Ryan Peterson and Ashton Grady led the way for the Crusaders. Kyle Bliss and Carter Ruff were top golfers for Woodland.
Streator were winners at home over Peotone at Eastwood Golf Course. Top golfers for the Bulldogs were Jaydon Nambo, Kylen Krasnican, Cole Park and Nolan Ketcham.
Serena were winners over Hinckley Big-Rock, Reed-Custer and their host Seneca at the Creek Country Club in Morris.
In girls golf, Ottawa defeated Joliet Catholic Academy in a dual matchup. Top performers for the Lady Pirates were Hannah Duggan, Marlie Orlandi, Caroline Cooney and Payton Nodland.
Shepherd was outscored 5-3 by Saratoga in Junior High Softball. Pitchers Lily Brewer and Piper Lewis combined for ten strikeouts. On offense, Reese Purcell went 2-4 with two singles and an RBI.
