Oglesby City Council hesitant to approve flooding fix on Heritage and Oakwood Ave.

Residents on Heritage and Oakwood Avenues in Oglesby are asking the city council for a solution to stop their basements from flooding when it rains. Heritage Garden Homeowner Association Pres. Duane Staus says when there is a lot of water in the early spring, a huge “lake” fills up the area and then the water goes into the basements.

Oglesby City Engineer Jim Clinard says a drainage ditch could be dug in the back of the condos which would cost the city about $17,000. But Commissioner Terry Eutis says he is still not sure if the city should get involved in the project.

Commissioner Jason Curran is also skeptical because he says there are four other neighborhoods that deal with flooding, and it could cost the city millions of dollars if residents expect the city to pay the for the costs. The city council tabled any action that could have been taken on the issue at Monday’s meeting. Mayor Dominic Rivara says he wants a solution before action is taken.
