Appeal scheduled in case over State’s Attorney vote count

Appellate judges will hear the case of the LaSalle County Republican Party versus Democratic County Clerk Lori Bongartz late next month. The political party claims the County Clerk’s Office bungled the vote count on election night in November 2020. It’s asking for a finding that Karen Donnelly was reelected State’s Attorney. Lower court judges rejected the claims.

If the party is successful, it won’t affect Democrat Todd Martin. He was declared the winner. But he’s since been appointed a judge and will leave the State’s Attorney’s Office on or about August 2nd. The appeal will be heard at the Third District Appellate Court in Ottawa on Tuesday, August 30th.
