Water reconnection rate increased in Marseilles

If you’re a Marseilles water customer whose service was turned off because of non-payment, it’ll cost you a lot more to reconnect today than it would have yesterday. The City Council last night raised the reconnection fee from $60 to $100. Mayor Jim Hollenbeck says it was costing more to send city crews on shutoff and reconnection assignments than the city was bringing in from the fees.

Hollenbeck says there are 18 to 25 shutoffs per month. He’d rather have the customers and City Hall work out payment plans.

On another rate measure, new water and sewer connections in the north side area where there are new water mains and a new sewer line will cost $15,000. Residents were given a year to connect at a lower rate.
