Tensions rose at the Marseilles City Council meeting as attendees discussed the Timber Edge housing development and water safety concerns. Residents criticized the lack of transparency regarding property acquisitions by Constellation Energy, which left homes vacant. Mayor Jim Hollenbeck, who denied knowledge of any development plans, mentioned the possibility of annexing land for future projects. Regarding water safety, Hollenbeck dismissed residents’ concerns, assuring them that water testing met Illinois EPA standards and that results would be available by January 15. In the wake of the 2021 Edwardsville tornado that killed six Amazon workers, an Illinois task force has recommended measures to improve warehouse safety during severe weather. The EF3 tornado exposed critical design flaws, leading to calls for updated building codes requiring tornado shelters and site-specific emergency plans following OSHA guidelines. While Illinois adopted the International Building Code in 2023, experts seek localized standards to address severe weather risks. The task force emphasized the need for stronger structures or internal shelters, referencing a 2004 incident in Woodford County where 140 people survived in a secure area. With Illinois reporting a record 142 tornadoes in 2024, enhancing warehouse safety and funding emergency response systems is vital for protecting lives.
