Maria Rose (Juchniewiez) Durdan, 72, of Ottawa, IL, passed away on October 20th, 2024 at her home after battling Type 1 Diabetes for almost 63 years.
Maria was born November 25th, 1951, in Ottawa, IL, to Edward and Rosemary (Brusca) Juchniewiez.
She attended St. Columba School and Marquette High School. She graduated from Ottawa High School in the Class of 69.
She received degrees from Illinois Valley Community College, a bachelor degree from Northern Illinois University, and her Masters Degree from Illinois State University.
Maria began teaching as a resource/special education teacher at Marseilles Grade School. Later, she transferred to Seneca Grade School before retiring in 2007. Maria tutored during her teaching career and in retirement.
Maria had various interests outside of teaching. She became a Master Gardener. She participated in the LaSalle County Art League. She served as past president of LaSalle County Diabetes Association. Maria enjoyed nature hikes and photography. She was very creative and loved painting.
She is survived by her Sister; Geraldine (Chris) Papageogiou, Niece; Anjelica Papageogiou, both of New Mexico, her former Husband; Don Durdan of Grand Ridge, Stepchildren; Nancy (Scott) Bucalo, Joe (Kelly) Durdan, and Mike Durdan. She will be missed by her many friends.
Maria was preceded in death by both her parents.
Cremation rites are being accorded to Maria entrusted to Ottawa Funeral Home.
A visitation will be held at Ottawa Funeral home on January 18th, 2025 from 2PM – 4PM. The Celebration of Life will follow at 4PM with Chaplain Dean Tieman officiating.
Memorials may be directed to Breakthrough T1D to support research and resources to fight Type 1 Diabetes.
