Ottawa High School’s Homecoming Week has been disrupted by a concerning incident involving a gun on campus. The school’s superintendent, Dr. Michael Cushing, has issued three safety alerts in response to growing fears among students and parents. The latest alert was sent on Thursday morning to address rumors on social media about a potential threat to the school. Dr. Cushing reassured parents that the school’s investigation found no credible evidence to support the rumors or indicate an active threat to student safety. As a precaution, additional law enforcement officers will be present at the school for the remainder of the week. The series of events began on Tuesday when rumors led school officials and Ottawa police to discover an unloaded gun inside a student’s locker. Two students have been charged, and one is currently in custody at the La Salle County Detention Home. In a message to parents on Wednesday, Dr. Cushing emphasized that the incident seemed to be isolated, with no ongoing threat to the school community. He urged students, staff, and community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Despite the disruptions, the school administration is working to ensure that Homecoming festivities can continue safely, with the added security presence providing extra reassurance to the school community.

Also on Thursday, the Marseilles Police Department concluded its investigation into a threat made by a middle school student, determining that it posed no credible risk to the safety of students or staff. Authorities were alerted immediately after the statement was made, prompting the school to implement safety protocols. According to officials, the threat, made around 10:30 a.m., was confined to a single classroom. While there was no mention of a weapon on campus, police conducted a thorough search of areas accessible to the student, finding no evidence of a weapon. The Marseilles Police Department and school administration emphasized their commitment to maintaining a secure learning environment and assured the community that any threat, regardless of intent, is taken seriously. For further inquiries, the public is encouraged to contact the Marseilles Police Department or Marseilles Elementary School.

An investigation is underway after threats were made against two schools in Dixon. Police say both Reagan Middle School and Madison Elementary Schools received a phone call yesterday morning from someone saying “Get ready for a school shootout today, bye.” The school resource officer identified the caller as a Madison Elementary School student, and two other students were identified as possibly being involved in the threats. The students told police they were “just joking when they made the call”.

The Ottawa Elementary School District is looking for a new superintendent as the current superintendent, Dr. Michelle Lee, is retiring. The district aims to announce the final candidate by March 10. The District 141 School Board has enlisted the help of an executive search firm to find a replacement. The board is stressing their commitment to a comprehensive search, raising questions about background checks, candidate exposure, and their access to the search firm’s candidate database. The search firm assured the board that the process would be fully customizable, accommodating specific requests and traditional elements of superintendent searches. The board has shown interest in conducting one-on-one meetings with members to create a leadership profile, organizing site visits, and holding a board meeting at the prospective new superintendent’s current school.
