La Salle County may get a new morgue

By WCMY News Dec 4, 2023 | 7:51 AM

At the Thursday La Salle County Board meeting, representing 3700 voters in District 24, board member Arratta Znanicki, gave a speech before the meeting. She said the county needed to look into the feasibility of a new morgue for La Salle County.

She said although all voters believe agree taxes are too high, coroner requests for a new morgue have been made every year since 2006.  In the past year, the Coroners office has relocated from the Etna Road complex to a forensics lab in Oglesby. Adding a morgue there makes sense, even if it may raise taxes.

In 2006 the coroner budget was 235,477.00 and next year’s will be 613,869.00.

Znanicki then asked the current coroner Rich Ploch to make a presentation at the next full board meeting about a study on how to finance a new morgue. The study was authorized last May.

She also asked the Board Chairman Don Jensen to bring forward a timeline to place the question of a new morgue on the November 2024 ballot.
