(Springfield, IL) — Illinois hunters harvested 262 turkeys during the just completed 2023 season, the same number as last year. The best year for turkey hunting in Illinois was 2005 when 12-hundred-18 turkeys were bagged. The most turkeys of any county were Jo Daviess County with 23.

Illinoisans are urged to check out the attorney general’s website for advice and guidance on avoiding scams.

(Springfield, IL) — The Illinois State Board of Education is facing a growing number of funding requests from schools across the state while it figures out how to manage shrinking budgets. At its recent monthly meeting, the board heard details of funding increase requests that total one-point-seven billion dollars. State law mandates Illinois to add 350 million dollars each year, with most of the money earmarked for districts that are the least adequately funded. Advocates want to push a 550-million dollar increase but Superintendent Tony Sanders says he’s unwilling to go beyond the 350-million dollar mark.

(Springfield, IL) — A mysterious superbug that’s been sickening and killing dogs across Illinois and 13 other states might have been identified. It still has no name but researchers at the University of New Hampshire are describing the microorganism as a “funky bacterium.” Dr. David Needle says its small size might be the reason it’s been so successful at evading canine immunity defenses. The respiratory illness starts out with a cough, like the flu or kennel cough, but lasts for six to eight weeks. Other symptoms include difficulty breathing, fatigue, discharge from the eye or nose, and acute pneumonia that doesn’t respond to antibiotics.

(Urbana,. IL) — Inmates at the Champaign County Jail will soon receive the benefit of free phone calls. The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office has selected a company that provides the county with investigative features but also offers inmates two free calls a month. County officials say this will help inmates with families who are struggling financially.
