Monterey Mushrooms, a seasoned player in the industry with over five decades of operation, has announced the closure of its Bureau County location, resulting in the unfortunate loss of employment for well over 300 individuals.
The decision to shutter mushroom-growing facilities in Princeton and Orlando, Florida, stems from a comprehensive analysis of the company’s business model, as revealed by Bruce Knobeloch, the Vice President of Marketing and Product Development at Monterey Mushrooms. Knobeloch points to a confluence of factors such as the global pandemic, adverse weather conditions, inflation, and shifts in market behavior as key contributors to the challenging decision.
With a legacy that spans more than 50 years, Monterey Mushrooms has been a stalwart in the industry. The closure will impact nearly 200 employees in Princeton, who will be eligible for severance packages. Unfortunately, the limited availability of transfer opportunities, coupled with the absence of other farms in close proximity, adds a layer of complexity to the situation. Additionally, the Princeton plant currently relies on more than 130 workers employed through various contract agencies.
The company anticipates completing the closure of the mushroom plant by the end of January, redirecting production to other Monterey farms. This strategic move reflects Monterey Mushrooms’ adaptation to the challenges posed by a dynamic business landscape, allowing for continued growth and resilience in the face of adversity.
