Inaugural Bill Walsh Sr. Barktober Fest – Dogs Were The Stars of the Day

It was a windy but warm Saturday at Ottawa’s Jordan Block. It was perfect weather for dog lovers as about 150 leashed dogs roamed the area. Bill Walsh employees created the first annual Bill’s Barktober Fest Bill Walsh, Sr.’s memory. His employees said it was a day he would have loved. Walsh, Sr. was a dog-lover and an early supporter of the no-kill Pet Project Shelter in Marseilles.

“Bill Sr. is smiling right now,” Debbie Hayne, a Bill Walsh employee for over 30 years, said. “He honestly would have loved this day.”

Rick Stoudt and his two-year-old dog, Rocky, were resting at one of the park tables.

“I saw the ad and figured Rocky and I should check it out,” Stoudt said. “I think this is a good idea. And Rocky certainly seems to enjoy it.”

Loretta Rodeghier and Susanne Whitney of Ottawa were with their two therapy dogs.

“We’re here to support Bill Walsh, Sr., and to support dogs in general,” Whitney said. “It’s a perfect day, and we both think it’s a good idea to do this. It gives dogs and their owners a chance to visit. And, it’s fun for the dogs,” she said with a smile.

The dogs were the stars of the day. Kane Family Farm offered an agility course for all canines and a big metal container for tennis ball bobbing. The Fido Fair allowed dogs to sniff gourmet treats and nose around the fashionable accessories.

Renee Shea of Ottawa and her 4-year-old rescue dog, Blue, were standing with Ella Yarman of Ottawa with her four-year-old dog, Gunner.

There were gourmet treats to sniff and fashionable accessories to look at.

“It’s amazing how all of these dogs are reacting to each other,” Shea said. “I haven’t heard any barking or seen any problems at all. I think this is a great day, and I love that there are areas we can buy treats and toys. It’s just a well-planned day.”

“Dogs are like kids, and I love how all the dogs socialize so well,” Yarman added. “This is just a wonderful day, and I hope 100 percent they have another one.”

It was a dog-day afternoon. For a $10 donation, dogs had their very own Barktoberfest bandanas; the Pooch Parade allowed dogs to win, whether in costume or just for being adorable.

There is an incredible bond between humans and their canine families. The Ottawa Police Department dogs and handlers showed off their skills, and a K9 attack demonstration thrilled everyone.

Agustin Leon and his 6-month-old dog, Marshall, both of Ottawa, had a good time.

“This was a great day,” Leon said as he petted Marshall’s head. “It was great how all the dogs got along so well, and the dog demonstrations were amazing. I hope they do this again next year.”

All proceeds will go toward the new Ottawa dog park.
