Wednesday evening After a La Salle Peru high school student noticed a social media post of another student posing with a weapon, the student contacted the La Salle Police Department. Chief Mike Smudzinski of the La Salle Police Department said the posing student was not in school and was referred to The Juvenile Delinquency Division at the La Salle County State’s Attorney’s office. The student was charged with a felony and disorderly conduct.

The Streator High School administration, along with its school resource officer, found a rumor Thursday about the possibility of a weapon in the school to be false. Superintendent Scott Cameron said in a statement to the community the school went into a soft lockdown. Sometime after, the lockdown was lifted and the students resumed their routine schedule.

A 64-year-old Putnam County man died Thursday after police said he was shot by his nephew. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a residence at 2 Walnut Drive in Lake Thunderbird. Deputies located a man on the ground at the end of the driveway and attempted lifesaving measures. Jack Carpenter, of the same address, died as a result of his injury. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said Carpenter was shot by Joshua Aalders, 26, of Spring Valley. Aalders was arrested and taken to the Putnam County Jail, where he is being held for further investigation.

The Marseilles City Council took no action this week on a decision that would allow Mayor Jim Hollenbeck to ‘execute a purchase contract’ for the Illinois Valley Cellular building, 200 Riverfront Drive. Hollenbeck told a standing-room-only crowd the city had acted on suggestions to request a second appraisal and obtain another building inspection. The decision to purchase the building for $1.45 million could be on the Wednesday, Oct. 4 council meeting, pending the city receiving the additional information.

A Newark Community High School District 18 school bus was involved in a three-vehicle crash yesterday in Fox Township. Crews from the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office were called to the scene at approximately 2:36 p.m. The school bus and two SUVs crashed at the intersection of Millhurst and Millington roads in Fox Township There were 10 people on the bus, including nine students and the driver. Those on the bus were treated on the scene by paramedics and did not require further medical intervention. The investigation has indicated the bus was not the vehicle at fault in the crash.

Spring Valley will be flushing water mains starting at 7 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25, through 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, throughout the city. During these times, residents should expect some increased cloudiness and isolated areas of low pressure. If any discoloration occurs in drinking water, residents are asked to let the faucets run until the water clears.

OBITUARIES:

Mary Jane (Rutherford) Rohr, 82, of Ottawa, passed away on Saturday, September 9th. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Mueller Funeral Home in Ottawa. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

Vivian Maierhofer, 94, of Seneca, passed away Tuesday, September 19th.

Visitation will be held this Sunday, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, the 25th, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, with burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Sandwich posted a 224 score to finish third in the Dwight Trojan Invite at Dwight Country Club. The event was a two-man scramble with team scores based on the total for all three pairs.

(Kansas City, MO) — The Chicago Bears take on the Super Bowl Champions when they visit the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead on Sunday. The Bears still haven’t won since last October after losing to Tampa Bay 27-17 last Sunday. Justin Fields has been an early disappointment in his third season, completing just 60 percent of his passes for 427 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. Chicago’s defense has been even worse, giving up more points than all but one other team in the NFL this year. Defensive coordinator Alan Williams resigned earlier in the week, so head coach Matt Eberflus will be calling the defense this weekend. Safety Eddie Jackson was the only player to miss practice with an injury yesterday, although two others were limited participants. Sunday’s game kicks off at 3:25 PM.

(Chicago, IL) — The Chicago Cubs continued their free-fall with an 8-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field. Dansby Swanson hit a late home run to bring Chicago within two runs with nobody out in the ninth, but the next three batters all recorded outs to end the game. Kyle Hendricks was charged with his eighth loss after giving up one earned run and two unearned runs in six innings. The Cubs are now tied with Miami for the final NL Wild Card spot. Jameson Taillon starts for Chicago against the Rockies this afternoon.

(South Bend, IN) — Number-nine Notre Dame faces its toughest test of the season when the Fighting Irish welcome number-four Ohio State to South Bend tomorrow. The Irish are 4-and-0 this season after crushing Central Michigan 41-17 last weekend. Notre Dame hasn’t beaten Ohio State since 1936. Tomorrow’s game starts at 6:30 PM Central time.

(Champaign, IL) — The Illinois Fighting Illini will try to get back in the win column when they host Florida Atlantic at Memorial Stadium tomorrow. The Illini are on a two-game losing streak after falling to number-seven Penn State 30-13 last weekend. Illinois is 1-and-2 overall and 0-and-1 in the Big Ten. The Illini have never played against FAU. Tomorrow’s game begins at 2:30 p.m.

(Evanston, IL) — The Northwestern Wildcats return to Big Ten play with a game against the Minnesota Gophers at Ryan Field tomorrow. The Wildcats lost to number-18 Duke 38-14 last weekend, and they’re now 1-and-2 overall with an 0-and-1 conference mark. Northwestern has lost its last three games against Minnesota. Tomorrow’ game gets underway at 6:30 PM.

>>Chicago Fire FC Play Against New England

(Chicago, IL) — The Chicago Fire FC look to snap a six-match winless streak when they host New England at Soldier Field tomorrow night. Chicago is coming off a 3-nil loss against Columbus on Wednesday, and the Fire hasn’t scored a goal in over a month. The club is in 11th place in the Eastern Conference with eight wins, nine draws, and 12 losses for 33 points. Tomorrow’s match kicks off at 7:30 PM.

(Chicago, IL) — The Chicago Blackhawks opened up training camp without one of their top executives yesterday. Associate general manager Jeff Greenberg was hired to become the next general manager of the Detroit Tigers yesterday. Greenberg spent just over a year with the Hawks after being hired in April of 2022.
