The SAFE-T Act takes full effect in Illinois today. With the measure, Illinois became the first state in the nation to eliminate cash bail. Reform advocates have contended for years that cash bail unfairly punishes poor defendants by keeping them locked up in jail before trial simply because they cannot afford to pay their set bail amount. The SAFE-T Act also offers new standards for whenever police use force. Some of those include officers providing help to a shooting victim after using force and also requiring other officers to intervene if they see unauthorized or excessive force being used.

The Illinois Supreme Court upheld the law in July after dozens of states’ attorneys challenged it delaying the intended January 1st, 2023, start date.
