The Ottawa City Council has a special meeting tonight at 7:00 that will start with a public hearing on the Community Development Block Grant and the Coronavirus Business Resiliency Program. Other businesses will also be discussed.

The La Salle County Coroner’s Office released the identity of a man in the Illinois River near Douglas and Buchanan streets on Ottawa’s West Side on August 4th. Reports to Ottawa Police and Fire indicated a person had gone into the water but had not resurfaced. 32-year-old Gary Lee Powell was found but died at the scene. According to Coroner Rich Ploch, a forensic autopsy was conducted and the incident continues under investigation by the coroner’s office and the Ottawa Police Department.

Ottawa Police dealt with a swatting incident Monday morning at Central Intermediate School. The building was cleared and secured from any threats. Students, teachers, and staff returned to the building after a short delay. The swatting issue occurred at several schools across the state early in the school day on Monday. Swatting involves a prank call made to 911 to cause emergency responders to make a run to a specific location.

The LaSalle County Health Department received confirmation that mosquitoes from Streator tested positive for West Nile virus. The mosquitoes were collected on August 28th and Environmental Health staff conducted the confirmatory test on the mosquitoes at the Health Department. Recent mosquito detections have been found in Mendota and an infected crow was found in Peru. Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headache, and muscle aches. Symptoms may last from a few days to a few weeks. Most people infected with West Nile virus will not show any symptoms; however, in rare cases, it can lead to severe illness including meningitis or encephalitis, or even death. People older than 60 and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness from West Nile virus.

The father of the Highland Park July 4th shooting suspect will stand trial. A Lake County judge rejected a request to dismiss charges against Robert Crimo Junior. The father is facing charges stemming from allegations he helped his son get a Firearm Owner’s Identification card. His son, Robert Crimo the third,

is facing numerous charges accusing him of killing seven people and wounding dozens more at the Highland Park Parade on July 4 last year. The father has a November trial date.

Chicago police are revealing more details about the shooting at the White Sox game last Friday. Interim Chicago police superintendent Fred Waller said the incident most likely involved a gun going off inside Guaranteed Rate Field. One woman was shot in the leg and another woman suffered a graze wound to the abdomen. Waller added that CPD did initially request that the game be halted after the shooting, but eventually allowed it to continue to not cause panic.

An employee is accused of bringing contraband into the Henry County Jail in Cambridge. Jessica Lindquist was arrested on charges of Bringing Contraband into a Penal Institution and Official Misconduct. State police were called out to the jail on Sunday. During an investigation, it was discovered that Lindquist was employed as a cook and was bringing contraband into the Jail and distributing it to inmates.

One person is dead following a crash between a semi-truck and a delivery van in DeKalb County. The accident happened last night in the area of Plank and Lukens roads in Sycamore township. The driver of the delivery van was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash is under investigation.

A 41-year-old Ottawa woman is charged by Ottawa Police with retail theft at Wal-Mart on Friday. Courtney L. Diaz posted a bond and was released with a court date.

34-year-old Kristof Bullock of Ottawa faces a charge of retail theft. Bullock was arrested by Ottawa Police Saturday at the Holiday Inn Express.

56-year-old Margaret Buckley of Streator was stopped by Ottawa Police Friday in the 500 block of State Street and charged with failure to appear on a charge of driving while license was suspended. Buckley was released on bond.

An Ottawa woman faces a charge out of Bureau County on failure to appear in court for driving while her license was suspended. 49-year-old Michelle Lucas was arrested Saturday by Ottawa Police.

A Kankakee woman and man were arrested by Ottawa Police Sunday at Wal-Mart on a charge of retail theft. 49-year-old Amber Fauber and 52-year-old Randall Phillips each posted bond and were released on a notice to appear in court.

41-year-old Rigoberto Rea Hernandez of Ottawa is charged with criminal trespass to land. Hernandez was arrested in the 1200 block of Chestnut Street, posted bond, and released with a court date.

Casimiro Crespo, 70 of Streator passed away Wednesday, August 23, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria.

A visitation will be this Tuesday from 10 – 11 AM at the Winterrowd Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Robert J. Pillion, 81, of Ottawa, passed away Friday, August 25, at his home. Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 30, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Ottawa Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, August 31, at 10:30 am at St. Columba Church, Burial will follow in St. Columba Cemetery.

The Cubs trail Milwaukee by five games in the NL Central race. Justin Steele starts for Chicago against Milwaukee tonight.

(Lake Forest, IL) — The Bears have added some offensive line depth. The Chicago Tribune is reporting that the Bears have acquired interior lineman Dan Feeney from the Dolphins. Feeney was a third-round pick in 2017, and he started every game for the Chargers between 2018 and 2020. He had two starts in 17 games with the Jets last season. In other team news, the Bears made 11 more cuts to their roster yesterday, including defensive lineman Bravvion Roy and tight end Lachlan Pitts. The Bears must have their roster down to 53 players by 3:00 PM today.
