Laurence B. Stalter, 84 of Princeton and formerly of Grand Ridge passed away Tuesday (July 18, 2023) at Aperion Care in Princeton.

Laurence was born on March 19, 1939, in Princeton to Francis and Lucile (Cox) Stalter.

Laurence was educated in the Tishkilwa grade school and graduated in 1957 from the Tiskilwa High School where he excelled in sports.

After high school he and two of his classmates joined the US Marine Corp. spending time in Okinawa Japan, after discharge in 1960 he worked at various farm and factory jobs. In 1965 he joined the Illinois State Police. He retired in 1994 as a Sergeant at District 17 in LaSalle/Peru. After retirement, he drove a Brinks Truck and helped plant and harvest crops for friends.

Laurence married Janice Kates on October 19, 1969. She survives.

Also surviving are his children, Laurence Bruce (Dorene) Stalter of Princeton, and Lisa (Mark) Baltikauski of Spring Valley. He also leaves six grandchildren, Melisa Holding, Matthew (Samantha) Stalter, Brandon and Ryan Myres, Aaron, and Starla Baltikauski, and 9 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Sharon Eubank, Janice Sash, and Sue Ellen Dyer, and the mother of his children Beverly Schneider.

He is preceded by his parents, an infant daughter, and 1 niece.

Laurence was a member of the Grand Ridge Methodist Church. The Illinois Police Association and the Fraternal Order of Police.

A visitation will be held Monday from 10 am until 12 noon at the Grand Ridge Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Monday at noon with the Rev. Paul Arnold officiating at the funeral home with burial to follow in the Grand Rapids Cemetery, Grand Ridge. With full military honors conducted by members of the Streator American Legion and VFW.

Memorials may be given to Grand Ridge Methodist Church, Grand Rapids Cemetery Association, or the donors’ choice.
