LaSalle City Council ratifies straw for Carus safety commission; resident says it violates law

Some city officials with the city of LaSalle could participate in the Carus Chemical Safety Plan Commission. The company announced last month that they wanted to create a community comprehensive plan with people from the community if another incident like the Carus fire happened. Alderman Bob Thompson says he’s recommended three people from the city to join the committee like Aldermen Jordan Crane, City Building Inspector Andy Bacidore* and Fire Chief Jerry Janick.

City Attorney Jim McPhedran says the committee isn’t run through the city which wasn’t what residents affected by the January 11th fire wanted to hear. Resident Jamie Hicks says he thinks the committee violates the U.S. Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act.

He also asked the council if he could join the commission, but Carus would have to do it because the city council isn’t in charge.

*Correction: In the original story we said it was Alderman Jim Bacidore that would be on the commission, it’s actually Andy Bacidore who will be a part of it. We apologize for the error.
