Police and firefighters were honored for helping save a 5-year old that was attacked by a dog last month at yesterday’s Ottawa City Council meeting. Commissioner Tom Ganiere says most emergency workers shy away from recognition, but the work they did after the dog attack could not be ignored.

He says after Police Officer Brett Wiedeman (WEE-deh-men) got the dog away from 5-year old Jace Kuhn and secured the scene on View Street, firefighters couldn’t take him to the hospital because other ambulances with patients were waiting at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.

Jace’s mother Amanda said that although he is still healing, he is happy and healthy. The Kuhn family awarded Officer Wideman, Lieutenant Jake Niewinski, and Capt. Kevin Theis medals of courage for saving Jace’s life Other dispatchers, police officers, and firefighters were also recognized for their efforts during the call.
