City of Streator purchases new license plate reading cameras

By WCMY News Jun 29, 2023 | 3:26 PM

The Streator City Council purchased eight Flock Safety Cameras Tuesday. The cameras read license plates and can tell police if the vehicle is wanted for something. Mayor Tara Bedei says she thinks purchasing more cameras will help police and the city out after several shooting incidents this year.

Police are still looking for a suspect in a shooting on N. Bloomington Street. However, Bedei says cameras have helped find a vehicle of interest in the shooting death of a man on N. Everett St. The cameras will cost $59,000 for the first year but $24,000 after that according to Deputy Police Chief Robert Wood.
