Ottawa woman, Lu Aussem, won Magnolia Network’s first Silo Baking Competition. Last October, Aussem headed down to Waco, Texas, to film the first season of Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Silo Baking Competition.

Aussem and 24 other contestants baked their own recipes for an opportunity to be one of four finalists to vie for the chance to win the golden whisk trophy and $100,000.

All Silo Baking Competition competitors were home bakers. Contestants chose one of three original recipes they submitted to bake in two hours for the judges to review.

Aussem picked a nostalgic bake from her childhood to present to the judges.  She drew inspiration from the old local Spence’s Bakery on the west side of Ottawa for her winning bake. Her chocolate Devil Cake sandwiches with vanilla buttercream wowed the judges, leaving her victorious.

Aussem said she had no idea going into filming that she would win the competition.

The Devil Cakes are now available at Joanna’s bakery, the Silo Baking Co., in Waco, Texas.
