LaSalle County GOP chairman says new Trump charges are political persecution

LaSalle County GOP Chairman Larry Smith says the new charges against former Pres. Donald Trump is political persecution. Trump has been charged in federal court with violating parts of the Espionage Act and obstruction of justice after allegedly keeping classified documents at his Florida home. He has pleaded not guilty. Smith says the process needs to be fairer, especially when Pres. Biden and former Vice Pres. Mike Pence also had classified documents found in their homes.

He says he believes the case could be dismissed or Trump could be found not guilty. Smith says although it’s too early for him to decide, it would make sense that Trump would still be the 2024 Republican presidential nominee.
