A Spring Valley man and Ottawa woman have been charged in the shooting death of 42-year old Eric Clements. He was shot and killed at his home in the 1000 block of Marcy St. in Ottawa Tuesday. 24-year old Nicolaus Phillips is accused of pulling the trigger. 21-year old Chastity Furar is accused of driving the vehicle the Phillips allegedly shot out of. During a press confernce LaSalle County State’s Attorney Joe Navarro says Clements was talking with Phillip’s girlfriend 21-year old Chastity Furar and it upended him. Furar allegedly drove her car to Clements’s house. Phillips and Furar apparently drove around the block of Clements home before calling him over to the car.
Navarro says after the victim was shot, he walked from the driveway to a garage where he died. Judge H. Chris Ryan set bond for an emotional Phillips at $5 million. He had to sit down after LaSalle County Sheriff’s Deputies had to hold him up. An emotional exchange of words between family members also happened during the first appearance of Phillip’s in Judge Ryan’s courtroom. We’ can’t say what they said but Phillip’s family was ushered out of Ryan’s courtroom by courthouse security and sheriff’s deputies. Ryan later warned the victim’s family that he will clear the entire courtroom if they don’t sit down.
Judge Cynthia Raccuglia set bond for a tearful Furar at $1.5 million. Navarro had asked for $4 million originally. Both are scheduled to be back in court in two weeks. Ottawa Police Capt. Mike Cheatham thanked the multiple departments and witnesses that helped in the investigation. You can hear the entire press conference here:
