U.S. EPA seeks public comments for plan update at Matthiessen and Hegeler Zinc Superfund site

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency wants to update the cleanup plan at the Matthiessen and Hegeler Zinc Co. Superfund site in LaSalle. Between 1858 and 1961, the industrial portion of the site operated as a zinc plant before being added to the EPA’s National Priorities List in 2003. The EPA says they’ve tested 1,000 off-site residential properties near the facility and have cleanup several hundred yards. They want to make an update to the 2017 cleanup plan that makes it more accurate that the waste in the industrial area is not primarily hazardous and therefore poses a lower level of risk. The EPA is taking public comments about the change now until the end of June. The agency is also hosting a public meeting on the change at LP High School on Wednesday, June 14th at 6pm. You can email comments to Ruth Muhsun at mahusun.ruth@epa.gov. You can go to the EPA’s website. Or you can attend the public meeting and make comments there.
