Catarino “Tino” Rubio, 71, of Ottawa, passed away on Friday, May 19, 2023 at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria, Illinois
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at the Mueller Funeral Home in Ottawa with Rev. Duane Kaufman, officiating. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at the funeral home.
Tino was born on November 14, 1951 in Pharr, Texas to Catarino and Frances (Delagarza) Rubio. He married the love of his life, Kathleen Reynolds, on May 5, 2005 in the Florida Keys. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Rubio, of Ottawa; his daughter, Brittney (Scott) Ahrendsen; one brother, Nick Rubio; four sisters, Delfina Towne, Linda (Ron) Burgess, Patti Gould, Carmen (Rick) Cooke; two grandsons, Tyler and Michael Ahrendsen; mother-in-law, Mary Reynolds Anderson; sisters-in-law, Melody (Tim) Fuller and Debbie O’Hara; his step-children from a previous marriage, Jerry, Jeremy, and Jennifer Castelli, and many, many nieces and nephews.
Tino was a part of the “Paul Street Northsiders” and remained life long friends with that group. He participated in wrestling and cross-country track at Ottawa High School, graduating in 1970. Tino was a cobbler and owned and operated Tino’s Shoe and Boot Repair in Ottawa. He worked in the industry for 54 years beginning his career at Salomone’s when he was 17 years old. He took pride in his workmanship and was widely known for his ability to assist his customers, especially those with prosthetic and foot issue needs, often making custom orders. Customers mailed shoes for repair to Tino from all over the United States.
Tino was an accomplished pool player and participated in many tournaments from Ottawa to Las Vegas. He served as league representative for our area in the American Pool Association.
His interests included gardening, science fiction movies, comic books and antiques. He loved the many cats and dogs he had over his lifetime. He enjoyed helping people and lending a hand whenever possible.
Tino was an Ottawa Treasure. He had a quick wit and a kind soul. He touched the lives of many people and will be sadly missed. His family would like to thank everyone for their kind words and generous support over the years. Memorials may be directed to the family.
